The Malligai in Indian Art

The malligai has been frequently portrayed in Indian art — in sculpture, painting, jewellery and various other forms of visual art — mainly in a religious context.

The flower is sometimes featured adorning a deity, or else as a peripheral decoration in the vicinity of the deity, or along the border of the sculpted panel.

The theme of most of these paintings is religious in nature, and both in the paintings and the sculptures, the jasmine is seen adorning the deity's head, neck, hands, and legs

The jasmine is also sometimes featured in traditional Indian jewellery, including necklaces and pendants. Such jewellery designs were evidently inspired by the portrayal of the flower in sculpture and painting.
